释义

Schoenbergianadj.n.

Brit. /ʃəːnˈbəːɡɪən/, U.S. /ʃənˈbərɡiən/, /ˌʃoʊnˈbərɡiən/
Forms: 1900s– Schoenbergian, 1900s– Schönbergian.
Origin: From a proper name, combined with an English element. Etymons: proper name Schönberg , -ian suffix.
Etymology: < the name of Arnold Schönberg (1874–1951), Austrian composer + -ian suffix.Schönberg, who was of Jewish ancestry, emigrated to the United States in 1934 to escape persecution by the Nazis. He probably adopted the surname spelling Schoenberg in the United States (although it has been suggested that he began to use it shortly before his emigration) and became a naturalized U.S. citizen in 1941. O.E.D. Suppl. (1982) gives the pronunciation as (ʃönbę·ɹgiăn) /ʃœnˈbɛːɡɪən/.
A. adj.
Of, relating to, or characteristic of Schoenberg or his music; resembling or influenced by Schoenberg's music. Schoenberg was a revolutionary and influential figure in modern music. He abandoned traditional tonal structures, introduced the concept of atonality, and developed his own system of twelve-tone music (cf. twelve-tone n. at twelve adj. and n. Compounds 2c).
