Etymology: < Yiddish shnorer beggar, scrounger < German Schnurrer beggar, vagrant (18th cent.) < schnurren to beg (see schnorr v.) + -er -er suffix1.Yiddish shnorer was reborrowed into German in the form Schnorrer scrounger, freeloader (19th cent.).
colloquial (originally in Jewish usage).
Originally: a beggar. Now: a scrounger, a freeloader; a layabout, a good-for-nothing.
