释义

schnooklen.

Brit. /ˈʃnʊkl/, U.S. /ˈʃnʊkəl/
Forms: 1900s– schnookle, 1900s– schnükel, 1900s– schnuckel, 2000s– schnukel.
Origin: Of unknown origin.
Etymology: Origin unknown. Compare later schnook n. and see discussion at that entry. No formally corresponding diminutive formation is attested in Yiddish. German Schnuckel small sheep, also frequently as a term of endearment (late 19th cent. or earlier; < Schnucke (see schnook n.) + -el -el suffix1) is unlikely as an etymon on semantic grounds.
U.S. colloquial and in Jewish usage. Now somewhat rare.
