Origin: A borrowing from Japanese. Etymon: Japanese satori.
Etymology: < Japanese satori (in Buddhism) deep perception, spiritual enlightenment (11th cent.), specific use of satori comprehension, understanding (8th cent.), nominalized stem of satoru to perceive, to realize, to awaken (especially spiritually) (8th cent.; 11th cent. in Buddhist use; < satoi intelligent, perceptive). In quot. 1727 via German.In Buddhist contexts, the sense of Japanese satori is based on similar Buddhist uses of the Middle Chinese word reflected by Chinese to realize, to awaken (written with the character corresponding to the initial kanji of both the Japanese verb and noun), in turn ultimately translating Pali bodhi or its Sanskrit etymon (see Bodhisattva n.), perhaps transmitted via a language of Central Asia.
Zen Buddhism.
Sudden spiritual awakening or enlightenment which defies reason and is achieved by meditation and study. Also in extended use.
