Etymology: Alteration of snapper n.1 after German schnappen snap v.German Schnapper is not attested as the name of a fish until later (1860 in a translation from English, or earlier).
Chiefly Australian.
A pinkish silver fish of warm temperate coastal seas in the western Pacific, Pagrus auratus (family Sparidae), caught for food especially in southern Australia and New Zealand.Also called snapper. Cf. cockney n. 6. The red sea bream of Japan, Pagrus major, is regarded by some zoologists as a variety of the same species.
