Scottish. Obsolete.
A trial specimen; a sample; esp. a test piece made by a craftsman and submitted to a guild or corporation as proof of his competence to be admitted as a member. Cf. say n.2 6, assay n. 17.In quot. 1535: (apparently) a cup or goblet made of precious metal of a conspicuously fine quality (cf. say n.2 6(a)).
