Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element; probably modelled on a German lexical item. Etymons: Greek σαπρός , -trophic comb. form.
Etymology: < Greek σαπρός putrid + -trophic comb. form, probably after German saprotroph (1912 or earlier). Compare earlier saprobic adj., saprobiotic adj.
Biology.
1. Feeding on or deriving nourishment from decaying organic matter; involving or relating to this mode of nourishment; = saprobic adj. b.
