Etymology: < the unattested Norn cognate of Old Icelandic séttar-eiðr , literally ‘oath of six’ < séttar , genitive of sétt group of six (only in compounds; < the same Germanic base as Old Icelandic sétti sixth adj.) + eiðr oath n., with remodelling (in Scots) after sax, Scots variant of six adj. (compare also saxt , Scots variant of sixth adj.) and aithe, Scots variant of oath n.
