Origin: A borrowing from early Scandinavian. Etymon: Norse seið-r.
Etymology: < Old Norse seið-r (Edda Gloss.), modern Norwegian seid, sei, Icelandic seið, seiði fry of codfish. Compare Gaelic saigh, saighean (saoidhean, saoithean), the coal-fish; Irish saoidhean (Dinneen) the young of any fish, especially of the codfish or coal-fish.
