Origin: A borrowing from Italian. Etymon: Italian ruvido.
Etymology: < Italian ruvido rough, uneven, rugged (13th cent.), uncivilized, ill-mannered (a1348), probably < classical Latin or post-classical Latin rugidus creased, wrinkly (in an isolated undated inscription on a terracotta vessel found in Sarajevo, Bosnia, as rugetus (see further Zeitschr. f. roman. Philologie (1898) 22 532); < rūga wrinkle (see ruga n.) + -idus -id suffix1).
