Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French ruteison.
Etymology: < Anglo-Norman ruteison (beginning of the 14th cent.), probably < ruter rut v.1 (although this is apparently first attested later, and only in continental French) + -eison -ation suffix. Compare post-classical Latin rutesion- , rutesio (1265 in a British source). Compare earlier rut n.1, and also earlier rutey v.
Obsolete. rare.
Rutting (of stags). Chiefly attributive in rutson time.
