Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French sagamité.
Etymology: < French sagamité (G. Sagard 1632) < Montagnais kichagamiteȣ or a similarly-formed Ojibwa (Old Algonquin) word now reflected by Ojibwa gizhaagamide, lit. ‘it is hot liquid’ ( < gizhide it is hot + (infixed) -aagam- liquid).
Among North American Indian peoples: a kind of porridge made from maize. Also: a stew made with this, along with other ingredients such as vegetables, wild rice, beans, and fish.
