In Finland: a short poem or song on an epic or legendary subject; spec. one of the songs which together constitute the Kalevala, an epic poem compiled in the nineteenth century; = rune n.2 2a.

1780 Crit. Rev. July 143 There are three different species of poetry in the Findlandish tongue... The first of these is the oldest and the original one; it is called in the single number run; and in the plural, runot; and consists of a kind of trochaic verse of eight syllables.
1850 Jrnl. Ethnol. Soc. 2 131 It appears to be a relic of antiquity, and is traced in their ancient pagan Runot.
1895 Oracle Encycl. II. 653/1 The discovery that many of these Runot could be dovetailed into a true and noble epic, based on the old myths.
