Origin: A borrowing from Dutch. Etymon: Dutch haakdoorn.
Etymology: < South African Dutch haakdoorn (see haakdoring n.), with remodelling of the second element after thorn n.; the first element may perhaps partly reflect folk-etymological association with hack v.1 Compare earlier haakdoring n. and hookthorn n.
Chiefly South African. Now rare.
Any of several shrubs or small trees of southern Africa having hooked prickles, esp. the densely spiny blackthorn, Acacia mellifera subsp. detinens. Cf. haakdoring n., hookthorn n.In quot. 1909: Acacia burkei (black monkey thorn).
