Etymology: Apparently < rove v.² + beetle n.², as a folk-etymological reinterpretation of a name for this insect in another Germanic language, e.g. Danish rovbille, literally ‘predatory beetle’ (a1770; < rov robbery, predation (see reif n.) + bille beetle n.²), or Dutch roofkever (1766; < roof robbery, predation (see reif n.) + kever beetle: see chafer n.¹), or the similarly-formed German Raubkäfer (1761 or earlier); compare later Swedish rovbill (1852).
