Etymology: < Old French rohal, rochal, Anglo-Norman and Old French roal walrus, walrus ivory (late 12th cent.; Middle French, French (rare) rohart ), probably < early Scandinavian (compare Old Icelandic hrosshvalr , literally ‘horse-whale’, probably walrus: see discussion at walrus n.). Compare post-classical Latin rohallum , rohanlum (in an undated text in Du Cange) < Old French. Compare ruel-bone n.Quot. a1973 shows a 20th-cent. revival of the Middle English word by Tolkien; compare similar later use of ruel-bone n.
Now rare (archaic in later use).
Ivory, probably from the tusk of a walrus or narwhal; = ruel-bone n.In later (attributive) use only in the work of J. R. R. Tolkien: see note at ruel-bone n.
