Etymology: Partly (compare quot. 1676) a revival of Old English rūn-stæf (see roun-staff n. at roun n. Compounds), with remodelling after stave n.¹, and partly < rune n.² + stave n.¹ after the Old English word or one of its cognates or parallels in other Germanic languages: compare Old High German rūnstab , Old Icelandic rúnastafr , Swedish runstav (17th cent. in this sense, but perhaps already in Old Swedish), Danish runestav (19th cent. in this sense). Compare also rune-staff n.
