单词 runcinate
释义

runcinateadj.

Brit. /ˈrʌnsᵻnət/, U.S. /ˈrənsənət/
Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin runcinatus.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin runcinatus sawtoothed (1537 or earlier; 1762 or earlier as a botanical term) < classical Latin runcina carpenter's plane, but formerly (e.g. in the 16th cent.) taken to mean a saw ( < Hellenistic Greek ῥυκάνη plane ( < a first element of uncertain origin + -ανη , suffix forming nouns), with insertion of -n- apparently as a result of folk-etymological association with classical Latin runcāre to weed: see runcation n.) + -ātus -ate suffix2. Compare classical Latin runcināre to plane. Compare slightly earlier runcinated adj., and also runcinato- comb. form.
Botany.
Esp. of a leaf: irregularly serrated, with the lobes or teeth curved toward the base.
