单词 rounsepike
释义

rounsepiken.

Forms: late Middle English rounsepyk, late Middle English rownsepyk.
Origin: Probably a variant or alteration of another lexical item. Etymon: English rowgh spyke.
Etymology: Probably a scribal error for, or misreading of, rowgh spyke ( < rough adj. + spike n.2) in the Winchester manuscript version of Malory, perhaps influenced by association with pike n.1, with reference to the pointed shape of the bough. See further E. Vinaver Wks. Malory (ed. 3, 1990) III. 1425. Compare later rampike adj., rampike n., which are unlikely to be etymologically related.
Obsolete. rare.
A leafless branch. Cf. rampike adj.
