Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: round adj., worm n.
Etymology: < round adj. + worm n. Compare German Rundwurm (late 18th cent. in sense 1, early 19th cent. in sense 2).
1. A large, parasitic nematode worm, Ascaris lumbricoides, which has a rounded cross-section and is found in the intestines of humans (more fully common roundworm, † long round worm). Also: any of various other, generally smaller, nematodes that parasitize humans or other mammals, mostly belonging to one or other of the genera Ascaris, Trichuris (whipworms), and Enterobius (pinworms).
