Etymology: Probably < rum, of imitative origin (apparently reflected in rumble v.² and its parallels in other Germanic languages) + -ing suffix¹, with humorous allusion to Elinor Rumming, the protagonist of a poem by John Skelton. Perhaps compare also earlier ramming n.¹, although this is apparently not attested in the sense ‘sexual intercourse’. With riffe, raffe in quot., compare earlier riff-raff n.² and perhaps also earlier riff-raff n.¹
