单词 rumming
释义

rummingn.

Origin: Probably formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: rum , -ing suffix1.
Etymology: Probably < rum, of imitative origin (apparently reflected in rumble v.2 and its parallels in other Germanic languages) + -ing suffix1, with humorous allusion to Elinor Rumming, the protagonist of a poem by John Skelton. Perhaps compare also earlier ramming n.1, although this is apparently not attested in the sense ‘sexual intercourse’. With riffe, raffe in quot., compare earlier riff-raff n.2 and perhaps also earlier riff-raff n.1
Obsolete. rare.
Perhaps: sexual intercourse. With playful allusion to John Skelton's poem The tunnyng of Elynour Rummynge (1545), and possibly also to the promiscuous Elinor in George Gascoigne's Discourse of the Aduentures passed by Master F.I. (1573). Cf. riff-raff n.2 2. It is unclear whether a pun is intended.
