单词 rumex
释义

Rumexn.

Brit. /ˈruːmɛks/, U.S. /ˈruˌmɛks/
Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin rumex.
Etymology: < classical Latin rumex sorrel (adopted as a genus name by Linnaeus in his Species Plantarum (1753) I. 333), of unknown origin.Classical Latin also has rumex , a kind of javelin or hunting-spear. Modern scholars are divided as to whether the plant was so called as the leaves resembled the spear tip, or the other way round. It seems more likely that the spear was named after the plant, since the name of the plant is attested earlier (Plautus), and a number of Latin plant names end in -ex (e.g. classical Latin cārex carex n., īlex ilex n., ulex ulex n., vītex vitex n.).
Botany.
A large genus of flowering plants belonging to the knotgrass family ( Polygonaceae), native chiefly to the north temperate regions and including the sorrels and docks. Also (in form rumex): a plant of this genus.
