Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin rugina.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin rugina (a1250 in a British source; 1363 in Chauliac), probably an alteration of classical Latin runcīna plane (see runcinate adj.). Compare Anglo-Norman and Middle French, French rugine (c1240 in Anglo-Norman in an apparently isolated attestation, subsequently from 1478 (in early use in translations of Chauliac)).
Surgery.
A surgical instrument used to scrape bone; a raspatory; a periosteal elevator.
