Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with English elements; modelled on a French lexical item. Etymons: Latin ācris , -o- connective, narcotic adj.
Etymology: Irregularly < classical Latin ācris sharp, pungent (see acrid adj.) + -o- connective + narcotic adj., after French narcotico-âcre (1815 in the passage translated in quot. 1816). With the formation compare acroamare adj., acrosaline adj.
Pharmacology. Now rare or disused.
Of a poison or its effect: both corrosive or irritating and narcotic.
