单词 rosella
释义

rosellan.

Brit. /rə(ʊ)ˈzɛlə/, U.S. /roʊˈzɛlə/
Forms: 1800s roselle (nonstandard), 1800s– rosella.
Origin: Of uncertain origin. Perhaps a variant or alteration of another lexical item. Perhaps from a proper name. Etymons: Rosehill n., proper name Rosehill, English Rosehiller.
Etymology: Origin uncertain; perhaps a Latinized alteration of either Rosehill n. or the name Rosehill (see Rosehill n.), or of Rosehiller ( < the name of Rose Hill (see Rosehill n.) + -er suffix1: see E. E. Morris Austral English (1898) at Rose-hill n.).For an alternative explanation of the word as an alteration of the female forename Rosetta (in the name of Rosetta Angas , née French (1796–1867), wife of George Angas, chairman of the South Australian Company) see J. D. Somerville ‘Rosetta or Rosella Parrots?’ in Emu 42 (1942) 13–16. In sense 2 perhaps alluding to a resemblance identified in the following:1903 Bulletin (Sydney) 10 Jan. 17/1 In Q. and N.S.W. out-back districts..the sheep grow tufts of belly-wool and so little on any other portion of their bodies that they are termed ‘rosellas’, after a parrot that fights so viciously as to be generally devoid of neck and back feathers.
1. Originally: an eastern Australian parrot, Platycercus eximius, which has a red and white head, yellow belly, bluish wings, and greenish tail (later more fully eastern rosella). Later also (usually with distinguishing word): any of several other brightly coloured Australian parrots of the genus Platycercus. Also more fully rosella parakeet, rosella parrot. There are three groups of rosella species, some of which can interbreed, and there are a number of distinctively coloured races.
