Origin: A borrowing from Afrikaans. Etymon: Afrikaans rooinek.
Etymology: < Afrikaans rooinek (1884) < rooi red (see rooibok n.) + nek neck n.1, apparently in allusion to the reddish sunburnt skin of fair-skinned visitors or recent immigrants unaccustomed to the blazing South African sun (although see further discussion at redneck n.). Compare redneck n. 5.In β. forms with the second element remodelled after neck n.1 In plural form rooinekke after the Afrikaans plural form.
South African. Chiefly derogatory.
A term applied by Afrikaans-speaking South Africans to: an English-speaking South African; an English person, a Briton. Cf. redneck n. 5.Also used humorously and affectionately by English-speakers of themselves.
