Etymology: < Afrikaans rooinek (1884) < rooi red (see rooibok n.) + nek neck n.¹, apparently in allusion to the reddish sunburnt skin of fair-skinned visitors or recent immigrants unaccustomed to the blazing South African sun (although see further discussion at redneck n.). Compare redneck n. 5.In β. forms with the second element remodelled after neck n.¹ In plural form rooinekke after the Afrikaans plural form.
