单词 rondavel
释义

rondaveln.

Brit. /rɒnˈdɑːvəl/, U.S. /ˈrɑndəˌvɛl/, South African English /rɒnˈdɑːvəl/
Forms: 1800s rondheuvel, 1800s– rondavel, 1900s– rondabel, 1900s– rondawel, 1900s– ronddawel, 1900s– rondhavel.
Origin: A borrowing from Dutch. Etymon: Dutch rondawel.
Etymology: < South African Dutch rondawel (apparently a1829 or earlier (compare quot. 1829); Afrikaans rondawel), further etymology uncertain and disputed. For a summary and discussion of the various suggestions, see G. J. van Wyk Etimologiewoordeboek van Afrikaans (2003) at rondawel. Etimologiewoordeboek van Afrikaans tentatively sides with G. S. Nienaber's etymology for the word (1968, in Tydskrif vir volkskunde en volkstaal 24 1–10), which derives it ultimately < Dutch rondeel small tower (1568: see roundel n.). However, the relationship of that Dutch word to the South African Dutch form has not been satisfactorily explained (it has been posited that an unattested spoken Dutch form *rondabel may already have existed in European Dutch use, and various models for an alteration of the ending of rondeel have been suggested, but none of them is fully convincing). Moreover, Nienaber assumed that rondawel originally denoted a type of small circular fortification, that occurrences of the word in writings of European settlers from the first half of the 19th cent. show this sense, and that the use with reference to a circular dwelling was a later semantic extension, dating from the time when the interior of the country had already been colonized and the military sense became obsolete. However, in quot. 1829, which is earlier than Nienaber's date for the South African Dutch word (1838, in the writings of the Boer pioneer Louis Trichardt), the word is not used in a military sense. The form rondheuvel in quot. a1875 is probably influenced by folk-etymological association with Dutch heuvel hovel n.2
South African.
A traditional circular African dwelling, usually with a thatched, conical roof. Also (in extended use): a circular building (typically with one room) used as a storeroom, a holiday cottage, an outbuilding on a farm, etc.
