Origin: Of uncertain origin.

Etymology: Origin uncertain.Compare earlier roun n. (see sense 4b at that entry). However, in spite of the partial semantic overlap, this is unlikely to be etymologically related, on phonological grounds (although ronne , ron could perhaps have arisen as spelling forms for an unstressed variant of roun n.). The word could perhaps show a borrowing < Irish rann (/raːn/, regional (Connacht and Munster) /rɑːn/) stanza, piece of verse (see rann n.), although this would be unexpected in the south of England and the West Midlands. The Irish word in this sense has no surviving parallels in other Celtic languages. Since most of the texts using the English word come from the Welsh Marches, transmission via an unattested Welsh borrowing of the Irish word is conceivable, but cannot be confirmed. The variant ran (in a single example, rhyming with wimman) may simply result from scribal variation, and so does not necessarily lend support to the assumption of an Irish borrowing.
