单词 pugne
释义

pugnev.

Origin: Apparently either (i) a borrowing from French. Or (ii) a borrowing from Latin. Etymons: French pugner; Latin pugnāre.
Etymology: Apparently < Middle French pugner to fight (mid 13th cent. in Old French; French (rare) pugner ) or its etymon classical Latin pugnāre to fight (see pugnacious adj.). Compare poynye n.With Old French, Middle French pugner compare Old French poignier , puignier to fight (c1200 as puignier ; earlier in a text apparently showing Occitan influence as pugnar (c1000); compare Old Occitan ponhar ). It is uncertain whether Old French pugner is to be regarded as a Latinized variant of poignier or as a reborrowing from Latin pugnāre , as poignier is rare. The rhyme in quot. c1425 perhaps indicates that the pronunciation was influenced by poynye n.
Obsolete. rare.
