Etymology: < German Alphyl (G. Bamberger 1894, in Berichte der Deutsch. Chem. Ges. 27 2583), irregularly < al- (in Alkyl alkyl n.) + phyl , shortened < Phenyl phenyl n.). In sense 2 after use of the German word by D. Vorländer 1899, in Jrnl. f. prakt. Chem. (Neue Folge) 59 247, recalling German aliphatisch aliphatic adj.
