Etymology: < French acrochorde (1789 in the passage translated in quot. 1802) or its scientific Latin etymon acrochordus (C.–F. Hornstedt 1787 in Kongliga Vetenskaps Akademiens Nya Handlingar 48 307) < classical Latin acrochordōn wart with a thin neck (see acrochordon n.); so called on account of the wart-like protuberances on its skin.

Zoology. Now rare.

1833 Penny Cycl. I. 98 The acrochord is covered with scales like all other serpents, though they are minute and separate from one another..When the skin is inflated, and apparent between the scales, these assume the granulated or warty appearance expressed by the name.
