Forms: 1800s rishtu, 1800s– reshta, 1800s– rishta.
Origin: A borrowing from Persian. Etymon: Persian rišta.
Etymology: < Persian rišta (17th cent. or earlier in this sense), specific use (on account of the worm's appearance) of Persian rišta thread, string < rištan to spin, further etymology uncertain and disputed.
In parts of central Asia: the Guinea worm, Dracunculus medinensis. Also: the disease which this causes; dracontiasis.
