Etymology: < scientific Latin Rivulus, genus name (F. Poey ( Memorias sobre la historia natural de la isla de Cuba II. (1860) 307) < classical Latin rīvulus small stream, rivulet, small channel ( < rīvus stream (see rive n.³) + -ulus -ule suffix), with reference to the habitat in which the type species, R. cylindraceus, was found by Poey.

A genus of small tropical American killifishes (family Cyprinodontidae) of fresh and brackish waters; spec. the mangrove rivulus ( Rivulus marmoratus) which is capable of self-fertilization and of surviving considerable periods out of water; (also rivulus) a fish of this genus.
