Etymology: < ring n.1 + straked adj.1, originally translating biblical Hebrew ʿāqōd striped, streaked (Genesis 30–31, only in the story of Jacob's deception of Laban). Compare ring-streaked adj.
Chiefly literary.
Having bands of colour round the body. Also more generally: having bands of colour.Translations of Genesis appear to be the source from which all later usage is derived (see quots. 1568, 1611).
