Origin: From a proper name. Etymon: proper name Romberg.
Etymology: < the name of Moritz Heinrich Romberg (1795–1873), German physician, who described the symptom in 1846 ( Lehrbuch der Nervenkrankheiten des Menschen I. 795). In sense 1 after German Romberg'sches Symptom (1852 or earlier). In sense 2 after German Romberg'scher Versuch (1867 or earlier). In sense 3 after German Romberg'sches Zeichen (1881 or earlier).

1. Romberg's symptom n. (also Romberg symptom) now rare an inability to maintain balance while standing in the dark or with the eyes closed, originally described by Romberg as a symptom of locomotor ataxia.
