Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymons: French aboliss-, abolir.
Etymology: < Middle French aboliss-, extended stem (compare -ish suffix2) of abolir to destroy (1265 in Old French), to revoke, annul (1344), to abolish, destroy by means of a legal decision (1417) < classical Latin abolēscere to shrivel up, to be forgotten, to pass into disuse < abolēre to destroy, obliterate, to put an end to (probably < the Indo-European base of ab- ab- prefix + the same Indo-European base as ancient Greek ὄλλυναι to slay, ἀπόλλυναι to destroy) + -ēscere (see -escent suffix). Compare Catalan abolir (a1390), Spanish abolir (c1500), Portuguese abolir (1690), Italian abolire (a1540).
transitive. To put an end to, do away with (an institution, custom, or practice); to eradicate, destroy (something prevalent); to annul or make void. Formerly also: †to destroy, demolish, annihilate, efface (something concrete); to destroy the power of (a person). Formerly occasionally with from, out of (a place).
