Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French raifort.
Etymology: < Middle French raifort, rayffort, riffort, rifort, etc. (15th cent. as raiz fors (plural); French raifort ) < raiz root (see race n.2) + fort strong (see fort adj.).
Now rare.
The root of the horseradish, Armoracia rusticana; the plant itself. Also (in later use chiefly Scottish): radish, Raphanus sativus.
