Etymology: < French phalarope (1760 in Brisson: see below), irregularly < scientific Latin Phalaropus (M. J. Brisson Ornithologia (1760) VI. 12) < ancient Greek ϕαλᾱρίς (Attic-Ionic ϕαληρίς ) coot ( < Byzantine Greek (Doric) ϕαλᾱρός having a patch of white: see phalaris n.) + ποδ- , πούς foot (see -pod comb. form), probably after coot-footed tringa at coot n.¹ Compounds.
