Origin: Formed within English, by conversion. Etymon: riem n.
Etymology: < riem n.Forms with -e- may result from folk-etymological association with South African Dutch rem brake (see remskoen n.). The comment in quot. 1934 probably reflects a different folk-etymological rationalization.
Now rare.
