An entertainment consisting of music, dancing, and sometimes gambling; cf. redoubt n. 3a. Introduced into England ‘in the year 1722, at the Opera-house in the Haymarket’ ( T. Busby Compl. Dict. Music (1811)), and particularly associated with London society in the 18th cent. Cf. assembly n. 7.
