Origin: Formed within English, by compounding; modelled on a German lexical item. Etymons: rhyncho- comb. form, -stome comb. form.
Etymology: < rhyncho- comb. form + -stome comb. form, after German Rhynchostom (A. Oswald 1893, in Vierteljahrsschr. der Naturf. Gesell. in Zürich 38 347).
Zoology.
In whelks and related gastropods, and in nemerteans: the anterior opening of the rhynchodaeum, through which the proboscis is everted.

Soc. 328 Oswald proposes to call the space between the introvert or proboscis [of certain gastropods] and its sheath the rhynchodæum, its anterior opening the rhynchostome, the opening at the apex of the proboscis the pharyngostome, and the oral aperture proper, where ectoderm joins the endoderm, the gastrostome.
1976 Biol. Bull. 150 65 The rhynchostome is applied to the insect and the soft parts are sucked out, leaving the exoskeleton and any internal hard parts.
