Etymology: < German Rhodopsin (A. Ewald & W. Kühne 1878, in Untersuchungen aus dem Physiologischen Institute der Universität Heidelberg 1 181) < rhodo- rhodo- comb. form + ancient Greek ὄψις sight, vision (see -opsis comb. form) + German -in -in suffix1.
Biochemistry.
A purplish-red pigment found in the rod cells of the retina in humans and most other vertebrates, consisting of a protein (opsin) combined with retinal. Also called visual purple.Rhodopsin undergoes conformational changes and dissociates after exposure to light, resulting in a cascade of reactions culminating in the generation of a nerve impulse.
