Etymology: < rhizo- comb. form + -podium comb. form. In sense 1 after scientific Latin rhizopodium (C. G. Ehrenberg 1821, in Nova acta physico-med. Acad. Caesareæ Leopoldino-Carolinæ Naturæ Curiosorum 10 169); compare earlier rhizopod n. 2. With sense 2 compare rhizopod n. 3.
