Origin: Probably a variant or alteration of another lexical item. Etymons: himself pron., his adj.
Etymology: Probably an alteration of himself pron., with substitution of his adj. for the first element, after myself pron. and thyself pron. Compare earlier himself pron. and itself pron., and compare constructions at self n. 1b. Compare ourself pron., yourself pron., theirself pron., and also notes at itself pron. and herself pron.Earlier currency (in sense 2) is perhaps implied by the following example, assuming that the scribe misunderstood nominative plural hy selfe (see 'emself pron.) in the lost Old English source as a singular:a1325 ( Writ of Edward the Confessor, Bromfield (Sawyer 1162) in P. Clemoes Anglo-Saxons (1959) 101 And ich nulle þolyen þat enyman enyþyng ouersoe nouþer Bissop ne nan oþer man boten lokewo ysself [prob. for hy selfe, i.e. the clerks of Bromfield] wolle. Compare also Old English his selfes , genitive of hē self , where the pronouns are in apposition; see B. Mitchell Old Eng. Syntax (1985) §484. (In quot. OE3 with emphatic interposition of āgenes , genitive singular of āgen own adj., in agreement with selfes ; compare later ownself pron.):OE Genesis A (1931) 1593 Ongan þa his selfes bearn wordum wyrgean.OE Ælfric Homily (Cambr.
