Origin: Formed within English, by compounding; perhaps partly modelled on a French lexical item. Etymons: rhizo- comb. form, -pod comb. form.
Etymology: < rhizo- comb. form + -pod comb. form, partly (in sense 1) after either Rhizopoda n. or its model French rhizopode. With senses 2 and 3 (and with the form rhizopode in quot. 1859 at sense 2) compare -pode comb. form.
1. Zoology. A protist of the group Rhizopoda.
