Etymology: < Italian intermezzo, more popular form of intermedio : see intermede n. With the form intermez, compare obsolete French intermèze, -mèse (16th cent. in Littré), < the Italian word.
1. (a) A short dramatic, musical, or other performance, of a light and pleasing character, introduced between the acts of a drama or opera (or, subsequently, in the latter half of the 18th cent., performed independently, and merging in the Opera Buffa). (b) A short movement serving as a connecting link between the main divisions of a large musical work, instrumental or vocal; sometimes used for an independent piece of similar character.
