Etymology: < rhizo- comb. form + -morph comb. form, after scientific Latin Rhizomorpha Rhizomorpha n. Compare French rhizomorphe (1805 or earlier). Compare earlier Rhizomorpha n.
1. Mycology. A root-like strand of fused hyphae (sometimes branching and forming a network) found in certain parasitic and saprophytic fungi, which can penetrate plant tissues and soil and by which a fungus may be able to extend over considerable distances to reach a new host.Originally thought to represent an independent fungus, a member of the (former) genus Rhizomorpha (see Rhizomorpha n.).
