Etymology: < scientific Latin rhizoma ( F. Ehrhart Beiträge zur Naturkunde IV (1789) 44) < ancient Greek ῥίζωμα stem, race, element, in Hellenistic Greek also mass of roots of a tree < ῥιζοῦσθαι to take root ( < ῥίζα root: see rhizo- comb. form) + -μα (see -oma comb. form). Compare later rhizome n.
