Etymology: < classical Latin Rīpaeus, Rhīpaeus and its etymon ancient Greek Ῥιπαῖος of or belonging to the Rhipaean mountains ( < Ῥίπαι , name of a mythical mountain range + -αῖος , suffix forming adjectives) + -an suffix. Compare earlier Riphaean adj.In Rhipaean mountains after classical Latin Rīpaeī montes, ancient Greek Ῥιπαῖα ὄρη.
