Etymology: < classical Latin rhīnocerōt-, rhīnocerōs rhinoceros n. Compare Middle French rhinocerote (1552), French rhinocérot (c1640), Italian †rinocerote (15th cent.). Compare rhinoceros n., and also rhinocerite n.The plural form rhinocerotes , originally representing Latin rhīnocerōtēs , Greek ῥινοκέρωτες , is found as a plural corresponding to singular forms both of the type rhinocerot and of the type rhinoceros (see rhinoceros n.). It is often difficult to tell from context which singular form is used by a particular writer, and all such examples have been placed at this entry. The Middle English form rynocerota is after the Latin accusative singular rinocerota (Greek ῥινοκέρωτα).
